Your recovery phrase is the wallet. Anyone who reads it owns everything at those addresses, on every chain, for ever. It is typed into a wallet application and nowhere else.

The one rule

Nobody legitimate will ever ask you for your twelve or twenty-four words. Not a support agent, not an exchange, not a wallet, not us. Every single person who asks is trying to steal from you, without exception.

And the four places the phrase never goes: a photo, a cloud note, a chat message, a website form. A screenshot syncs. A note syncs. A message is stored on someone else’s computer.

What a recovery phrase actually is

Twelve or twenty-four common words, in a fixed order, drawn from a public list of 2 048. From those words a wallet computes your private keys — and it does that computation the same way in every wallet that follows the standard.

That is why importing works at all: the phrase is not tied to the application that showed it to you. It is the seed the addresses grow from.

Where to keep the phrase

On paper, in your handwriting, in a place where a flood or a fire will not reach it. Two copies in two places is better than one. A metal plate is better than paper if the amount justifies it.

What matters is that it is not on a device connected to the internet, and that someone you trust knows where to look if you cannot.

Both lengths are standard and both import the same way.

I think someone saw my phrase. What now?

Create a new wallet with a new phrase and move everything to it, keeping enough of each chain’s own coin to pay for the transfers. A phrase that has been seen cannot be made private again.
